Christ Is the Answer...But What's the Question?
I sometimes see T-shirts, bumper stickers, and billboards with the slogan, “Christ is the answer.” But what questions is He the answer to? Consider a few.
How many paths to God are there? Christ is the answer. “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
Does God really love me? Christ is the answer. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
How can a holy God justify sinful people? Christ is the answer. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed…so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:23-26).
Can God really sympathize with me? Christ is the answer. “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:14-15).
Is there a clearly defined way to live so as to please God? Christ is the answer. “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously” (1 Peter 1:21-23).
Is it possible to know real joy and peace? Christ is the answer. “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:4-7).
How can a Christian overcome sin? Christ is the answer. “But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:7-9).
Is there hope beyond this life? Christ is the answer. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-4).
