Oh Lord my God
O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
This poem How Great thou Art, was written by a sailor. Carl Gustaf Boberg as he walked through the country side along the Swedish coastline in 1885. That afternoon he was awestruck by the perfect beauty of what God had created.
Have you ever been struck by the beauty and the majesty of Gods creation? Have you ever watched a sunrise or a sunset or starred at the stars at night or seen a sky so blue that it takes your breath away? I sure hope so and if not … you should stop and look around. God created all of this for us. He wants us to take notice of the beauty of his creation and its wonders.
Genesis 1 v 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Psalms 19 v 1
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
He also said this to Job
Job 38 v22
“Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail?”
Take a look at a picture of a snow crystal under a microscope? You will see what God is talking about, no two are alike and they are perfect geometrical shapes do you think this is an accident caused by mother nature? My friends there is no mother nature only God and his wisdom. You can see his handy work in the storms that come in the spring lightning produces nitrogen that fertilizes the ground so things can grow. Birds migrate from colder to warmer climates how do they know when to go or where? It is the mighty hand of God that directs everything that happens on this planet. The moon controls the tides and is just far enough away from the earth to manage them perfectly.
He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows it’s time for setting.
Genesis 1:14 ESV / 49
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,
Look at the butterfly how it develops from a caterpillar to a complex insect that can fly! It was programed to do this by our God.
Job 12 v 7 -10
But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;
ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you.
8Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you;
let the fish of the sea inform you.
9Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the LORD has done this?
10The life of every living thing is in His hand,
as well as the breath of all mankind.
Can you believe that this all knowing wise spiritual being “God” created all of this and still remembered each of us? Not only that he gave all his creation to us.
Genisis 1 v 26-28
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over [g]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that [h]moves on the earth.”
He did not stop there... he kept on giving!
John 3 v 16-21
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
He sent his only son to die for you. To suffer a beating with whips made of hooks and then to drag the cross through the streets all the while being mocked and spit on and pushed to the place of the skull. There to be nailed to it with spikes in his hands and his feet…. And then raised up.
He has given us EVERYTHING and we still turn away..
And so the song continues and it says…
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin.
I don’t know about you but when I sing this part of the song, I cannot do it without tears, it hits right where it supposed to deep in my heart. Oh, how I love my God!
How great thou art!
