Self Forsaken
Romans 8:38-39
The depth and beauty of God's love described in these verses is truly awe-inspiring. His eternal plan is built on a framework of this incredible love. Each living stone is bonded together by that love and held fast and sure by Jesus's holy sacrifice. We have such a blessing being children of God, because we have this assurance He will never forsake us!
Earlier in the same chapter, Paul asked the following question prompted this beautiful passage, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" (Rom. 8:35). Sadly, there actually is one thing that can separate us from these Divine blessings … ourselves. We can choose to forsake our God and turn our backs on this great love!
Our choice to pursue a path of sinfulness will drive a wedge between us and God. Plain and simple: sin separates us from God. Those on a sinful path may appear outwardly to be righteous. Jesus acknowledged this in His teachings: "On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness'" (Matt. 7:22-23).
How is your relationship with God? Have you chosen to separate yourself from God's love for your own selfish passions? Everyone should take stock of their hearts. If you have a "secret sin" that you think you're hiding from the eyes of man, just remember that God discerns all. Repent of any wrong in your life and ask God to heal the breach that you have caused, so that on the last day you will hear Jesus say, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world" Matthew 25:34.
