Thoughts from II Peter: Grow and Don’t Stray

Peter urged the church to stand firm in his first letter and he does so again in the second. This is the theme of II Peter; to stand firm by growing and not departing from sound teachings. Within this theme, Peter offers several reminders:
  1. Godly living is the evidence of salvation. If Christians really believe what they say they believe, they will display moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love. II Peter 1:3
  2. Scriptural truth and prophecy are only from God. The teachings Peter and the apostles passed on weren't something they invented; they were eyewitnesses to truths from God. II Peter 1:21
  3. False teachers will try to deceive the church. They'll introduce divisive teachings that encourage people to indulge in the sins of the world. Christians must hold fast to the sound teachings and not falter. II Peter 2:1-22
  4. Mockers will discount Jesus' second coming. Peter doesn't know when Jesus was coming back, but he assured the church that Jesus was indeed returning, and His church should behave accordingly. II Peter 3:1-16

It is with these four aspects we can see the theme of the letter on display throughout II Peter.
