The book of Lamentations is not exactly the most “upbeat” book in the Bible. In fact, it’s quite depressing…because in it, the author laments bitterly over Judah’s lost condition in Babylonian captivity. Yet, sad as it is, the writer also has something positive to say! He emphatically affirms, “The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (3:22-23). ETERNITY IN THE HEART

Solomon said that God set eternity in the hearts of men (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Solomon experienced every earthly pleasure possible and made this tremendous statement. “Eternity” refers to a deep abiding awareness of something beyond this life. One of my heroes was Tom Landry from Mission, Texas. In WWII he flew thirty missions as a B-17 pilot. He later coached the Dallas Cowboys for twenty-nine seasons. Tom was a God fearing man, who would arrive at Texas Stadium just before a Sunday game… always after teaching a bible class at his church. I was blessed to meet him at a business banquet in 1994. He was quiet, unassuming, and tried not to be noticed… not possible! At the podium these were the first words he spoke from memory… from his heart:

We learn about a thing by experiencing it. Babies learn sweet from sour, hot from cold, and wet from dry by experiencing these things. Even so, we learn spiritual truth by experiencing it in God's word, which is truth (John 17:17). Our use of God's word enables us to readily distinguish between truth and error. I wonder how many people know that the Salvation Army is a church. The only time you see them is at Christmas time when the red kettles and bell ringers show up at entrances to shopping malls. How many times have people tossed money into the kettle, accepted the cheery "God bless you!" from the bell ringer and felt like they have helped a worthy charity. People need to realize that the Salvation Army is not a charity, it is a religion.
