Identity is quite important. If you want to fly, get a driver's license, open a bank account, etc., you must show proper ID. Because there are so many fake IDs floating around, proper documents must be produced. In the same way, the body of Christ, his church, must have a proper ID. The proper records, the Bible, give a definite description.
Since the Bible teaches that baptism is an essential part of my relationship with Christ (Mark 16:16; Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3-5, etc.), then it behooves me to make sure that my baptism is pleasing to the one who has given the ordinance. It isn’t to please family, my church or myself. I can only strive to please the Lord. “For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still striving to please men, I should not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10).
Shakespeare’s Hamlet pondered the question: “To be, or not to be. That is the question.” In the following pages, we want to deal with the question: “To play, or not to play. That is the question.” The question continues as it has through many centuries and divisions in the body of Christ as to whether or not it is acceptable to use instruments of music in worship to God.
