  • Sowing and Reaping Benevolence
  • My Sin Is My Fault

1 Corinthians 5 deals with the case of a Christian man who was carrying on a sexual affair with his own father’s wife. The situation had gone on for some time, while the rest of the saints at Corinth had done nothing. The man’s unrepentant condition now cried out for action by the church.

I’m curious how this man got to such a point. What factors influenced his decision to engage in sexual immorality — and to continue in it, unrepentant? Is it possible that the troubles in the Corinthian church might…

  • A Dozen Ways to Murder a Church
If you would like to kill the work of your local congregation, then I have the perfect plan:
    1. Skip services often and encourage others to skip, too.
    2. When you do attend, come in late and cause a little disturbance. While there, take a good nap.
    3. Always be critical and nit-picky.
    4. Never volunteer to help, but always complain about the way the volunteers are doing things.
    5. Even though you don’t want to volunteer, still act annoyed and put out when you don’t get an important job.
    6. If asked directly to give your opinion, act like you don’t have one. Later,…
  • "WILD GOURDS"

    “WILD GOURDS”
    (By Jarrod Jacobs)

“And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. So they poured…

  • Though He Be Dead He Still Speaks

On this Memorial Day my mind goes back in time to heroes I have known. And as usual, I think of my brother in Christ from years past. I do not wish to forget, for he still inspires me. Some of you will recall my sharing him with you years ago, but most will not.

Wilfred H. “Chick” Mensching served as a Marine for thirty years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He survived the Bataan Death March, was a prisoner of war in the Pacific for three and one half brutal years,…

  • THE ONE WHO OVERCOMES

    THE ONE WHO OVERCOMES
    (By Joe R. Price)

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5, NKJV)

Faith is the victory that defeats the world of evil. A good brother reminded me that the righteous die victoriously (Sword Tips #2226), as assured in Revelation 2-3. Let us briefly note those assurances to “him who overcomes.”

  • Shrewd Sons
Jesus once lamented that the sons of this age are shrewder in relation to their own generation than the sons of light (Luke 16:8). In other words, people of the world have more initiative toward worldly things than Christians do toward heavenly things.

Consider a man who wants to catch fish. He does not expect fish to swim up to his door and invite themselves in. He is realistic. He’ll buy ample equipment: a rod and reel (likely several), hooks, a net, a bait bucket, a stringer, all sorts of tackle and a deluxe box to keep it in,…
