• Q&A: What does unequally yoked mean?

  • Who is your shepherd?

Most people have at least heard of Dungeons & Dragons.  It began in 1974 and was a popular role-playing game throughout the 1980’s, which my mom tells me also became a Saturday morning cartoon series for a short time. (I had no idea!) In recent years, the game has made a come-back, and there is even a movie in the works for next year. My dad got me interested in the game a couple of years ago, and I have several guidebooks, that I like to read.

A quote from one of the guidebooks recently caught my attention:

    “Devils look…

  • "Essential" Church Members
In every healthy congregation you will find certain people that comprise the essential "heart and soul" of the church. Note …
    • They are always present at the assemblies. They make it a point to never miss any of the services. If it is necessary to make changes, adjust schedules, suffer inconvenience or simply miss out on other activities, they will do so because they are committed to being present every time the doors are open.
    • These folks actually look for opportunities to serve. If there is work to be done, Bible classes to be taught, weak members to be…

  • Singing With Emotion and Intellect

The Bible makes it clear that the songs we sing originate in our heart. If you’re like me and are melodically-challenged, it’s reassuring to know that God is happy when the melody in our songs come from the heart.

Ephesians 5:19 – Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

But it’s not just the melody that originates in our hearts; it’s the actual words and emotions that we express that originate there, too.

Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one…

  • Being "On Time" For Worship
Have you ever thought about how scrupulous people can be in the matter of punctuality in their being on time for their various commitments? If a concert is set to begin at 8:00 P.M., — they arrive in plenty of time to take their seats before that very first number begins. If they are to be dinner guests at a 6:00 P.M. affair, it is almost certain that they will leave home in ample time to make it. They would not want to insult the hostess. If employed by a company which requires them to report for work at 7:30…
  • Fewer See The Bible As The Word Of God
The Gallup organization reported in July 2022 that a new high of 29% of Americans say the Bible is a collection of “fables, legends, history, and moral precepts recorded by man”. In 1980, 10% of Americans felt this way. As you might imagine, the results fell broadly in line with American’s religious affiliation. For instance, 16% of people who identify as “Christian” believed that the Bible was mythical and produced man, while 65% of Americans who had no religious affiliation felt this way. The bottom line is belief in the Bible is declining, part of a general pattern of declining…

  • An Interpreting Angel

    An interpreting angel

After looking at a dozen or so translations, Job 33.23 is a bit of a challenge. Based on my study, I think the best translation is the one found in Keil and Delitzsch’s commentary.
If there is an angel as mediator for him, one of
a thousand, to declare to man what is for his profit.

To try to understand this, let’s begin with the context. Job 33.23 is in the long speech of Elihu. Elihu was a young man who had patiently listened to the discussion…

  • What If Everyone in Your Local Church Was Like You?

What If Everyone in Your Local

    Church Was Like You?

People make up local churches. Thus, the stronger the individual Christians are who make up a particular local church, the stronger that church is. What if everyone in the local church was just like you? Would it be a church that is strong or weak? Would it be a church that is pleasing or displeasing to Christ?

If everyone in the church was like you, what kind of attendance would there be? Would visitors come and find an empty building on Wednesday nights? Do you make a habit of attending every assembly of…
