• Fools for Christ

There’s a pretty easy way to determine what a person really cares about in life. Just answer the question, “What is he willing to look foolish for?”

Strong devotion to a cause can make people do things that otherwise would embarrass them. How else to explain people at a football game with painted faces or giant hats shaped like a wedge of cheese? They really want to support their team, and they don’t mind looking a bit ridiculous to do so.

For several years, my wife and I worked with…

  • On Disagreement

Any time you find yourself in a disagreement with someone else, remember:

    • Talking the loudest does not make you right.
    • Talking the fastest or the most does not make you right.
    • Being more impassioned or emotional does not make you right.
    • Sighing or rolling your eyes does not make you right.
    • Inserting foul language does not make you right.
    • Getting angry and yelling does not make you right.
    • Attacking the other person’s motives or honesty…
  • Religious Faith or Cultural Identity?

Addressing the scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church in recent decades, writer Kevin D. Williamson (who is himself Catholic) remarked that those scandals may well “hasten an exodus of Americans from the Catholic Church entirely.” He continued:

If this is likely, it is in part because a considerable share of American Catholics are not Catholic in the sense of believing what the church teaches…

Rather, for many Americans…Catholicism is not a religious faith but a cultural identity…[I]t is an identity marker that is less about who they are…

  • "Preacher Needed"

An issue of a religious magazine contained the following in its “classified” section:

The ____________ Church of Christ … is looking for a full-time pulpit minister. He needs to be: (1) married, with an active wife, (2) graduate of a Brotherhood school of preaching, (3) knowledgeable of the Scriptures, (4) experienced in ministry (3-5 years min.), (5) experienced in counseling (a plus), (6) self-motivated, evangelistic, family and youth oriented.

A few things here seem amiss. Think with me.

  • "The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail Against It"

On one occasion, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of Man is?” The answers varied: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or perhaps one of the other prophets. Then Jesus asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus blessed Peter for his confession, adding, “on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18, ESV).

What did Jesus mean when he said the gates of hell will not prevail…

  • “It Seems to Me I’ve Heard That Song Before…”

“…It’s from an old familiar score, I know it well, that melody.” This million-selling song was made popular by Harry James, who was born in Albany, Georgia. When he was eight, his family moved to Beaumont, Texas, the home of the world-famous athlete, “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias. James and his orchestra, who began playing in 1939, […]

    Politics

Reminders for a political season (mostly for me):

    1. We are not baptized into a political party, but into Christ. This sets our priority.

    2. Only Christ, not a party, is to be sanctified in our hearts as Lord (1 Pet 3:15). There is no competition for Lordship. If there is, we are guilty of idolatry.

    3. The Christian’s identity is wrapped up in Christ, not in a party or human. To live is Christ (Phil 1:21; Col 3:4).

    4. No party or other person has been crucified for us. Nor are we crucified with or for a party, but only Christ…

  • What is Truth?

In the eighteenth chapter of John, Christ stood before Pontius Pilate to answer charges of insurrection. Pilate, the governor of Judea, asked Christ if he was the King of the Jews. Christ answered by saying His kingdom was not of this world. Pilate then asked if He was a King. Jesus responded in John 18:37 by saying, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is…

  • Fighting Discontentment
