    Our Ebenezer's

The song Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing proclaims, “Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’ve come.”

This is a reference to 1 Samuel 7:12 where Samuel raised a stone and called it Ebenezer. The stone was named the “stone of help” to be a continual reminder to the Israelites of the help God had provided for them in their battle against the Philistines.

1 Samuel 7:12 Then Samuel took a stone... and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath Jehovah helped us.

Throughout the Old Testament we see a pattern of God’s followers setting up visual reminders…

    Unheeded Warnings

As Julius Caesar was on his way to the Senate meeting at which he would be assassinated, someone handed him a note that warned of the plot against him and even named some of the conspirators. But Caesar was too preoccupied to read the note.

On the final night of the Titanic’s tragic voyage, two messages from nearby ships came in, warning of heavy ice directly in her path. But Titanic’s radio operator was trying to catch up on sending messages for passengers. The first radio warning he acknowledged, but never delivered to…

    River of Life

It takes an adult Chinook Salmon 19 to 20 days to swim from Bonneville Dam all the way up to Idaho in average flow. That’s about 280 river miles that the fish are covering in just under 3 weeks. Given that the conditions are optimal, a salmon can cover about 14 river miles per day, but factors such as flow strength, river depth, and possible obstacles along the way will slow their progress dramatically. In most rivers there are plenty of obstacles in the fish’s way and if the river is high and the current extreme, it might only…

    Public Opinion vs. Truth
One method that is used to change people's belief is the use of public opinion polls. It's a clever approach because we as humans — for the most part — like to blend in with the rest of society.

Daily we are confronted with "statistics" which are gathered from polls as to whether something is right or wrong. A colorful bar-graph in the corner of a newspaper may inform us that 55 percent of all Americans believe that one's "sexual preference" should not be a factor in determining whether they should be accepted into military; a TV network news…
