  • Mistakes

When we lived in north Florida, a religious group posted signs all over our town advertising special lessons on the final judgment. The signs asked, “Where will you be when reality strikes?” They really got my attention — mainly because they were all misspelled, so that they read, “Where will you be when realty strikes?” I chuckled as I pictured hordes of well-dressed real estate agents angrily descending on the community.

Such things are evidence of a simple fact: People make mistakes. In any human endeavor, sooner or later, they will happen.…

  • WHOM SHALL I FEAR?

    WHOM SHALL I FEAR?
    (David Dann)

As the inspired psalmist, King David writes, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, in this I will be confident" (Psa. 27:1-3).

  • The Lord Surrounds His People

With my wife being a schoolteacher, and myself a college student, and our wedding taking place during our Christmas breaks, we had little time and no money to spend on an elaborate honeymoon. Over the next year, we saved and planned for a belated honeymoon on our one-year anniversary to Salt Lake City, Utah. After the flight was over, the rental car obtained, and all the hustle and bustle of the traveling behind us, it didn’t take long for us to see the beauty of God’s creation all around us. Literally. Salt Lake City lies in a mountain valley with the…

  • There Is A Sea

Hymn number 641 in our big book uses an interesting approach to teach a valuable lesson.  The author draws our attention to two seas mentioned in the New Testament.

As the Jordan River flows southward from its sources near Mount Hermon, it follows a winding course of nearly 200 miles.  Along the way it passes through the Sea of Galilee and finally empties into the Dead Sea, which due to evaporation contains a salt concentration almost 10 times that of the oceans. Verse one describes the Sea of Galilee:

There is a sea which day by day
    Receives the rippling…

  • What Should You Do?

The following is actually “borrowed” from an illustration Dan Shipley once used in a sermon. As you will see, it is intended to help someone get over the huge hurdle of feeling that if they obey the truth, they have learned they will be condemning some loved one who did not obey it.

I can only try to understand how hard it is for someone who has to deal with that issue, and I know Satan has used it countless times to keep someone from obeying the gospel.

The illustration went something like this...

Suppose you are running a business where you…

  • IT'S NEVER JUST A PIANO

    IT'S NEVER JUST A PIANO
    (Mike Thomas)

I live 150 miles from where the first instrument was brought into worship services of groups that would be known as churches of Christ. The actual melodeon is on display at Midway University (Kentucky), and I hope to make it over one day to see it if for no other reason than to be reminded of the great chasms that come when brethren rely on human opinion instead of the Scriptures.

Whenever a church decides to use mechanical instruments in worship, they…

  • One Sinner Destroys Much Good
“Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good” (Ecclesiates 9:18). Here is a thought that each of us must consider. It tells us that a sinner wields a lot of influence, but it is the wrong kind and it is destructive! Notice that the text doesn't say that "many sinners destroy much good," but "one sinner destroys much good." Many times one sinner does more harm to the cause of good, than one righteous person does to a stampeding herd of ungodliness.

A preacher may be a very effective pulpiteer and he may have…
