    Culture Wars

Cultural differences are found on many different levels.  There is the culture that each of us grow up in our own homes.  Simple things like the kinds of things you enjoy, what time is bed time, do you call it lunch or dinner, is it vacuuming or sweeping?  There are cultural differences in where we grow up.  Those who live in the city have a different perspective than those who live out in the country.  There are cultural differences in where one lives nationwide depending on which state you live in.  There are all kinds…

  • River of Life

It takes an adult Chinook Salmon 19 to 20 days to swim from Bonneville Dam all the way up to Idaho in average flow. That’s about 280 river miles that the fish are covering in just under 3 weeks. Given that the conditions are optimal, a salmon can cover about 14 river miles per day, but factors such as flow strength, river depth, and possible obstacles along the way will slow their progress dramatically. In most rivers there are plenty of obstacles in the fish’s way and if the river is high and the current extreme, it might only…

    What is Repentance?

    By Stan Cox

I recently had a discussion with a young man with a Baptist background, who was advocating the position that a man is saved at the point of faith. He used typical arguments that I have heard many times before. As we talked I asked him if he thought repentance was necessary for salvation.

In his absolute opposition to the idea God requires any acts of obedience (works), how did he deal with the Bible call to repent? His answer was interesting. He said, "I believe something different than you about repentance. Nowhere…

  • Desiring a Better Country

All of our lives are invaded by misfortune and sorrow. Have you ever considered how the painful and disagreeable aspects of our temporal existence can help us set our minds on the things above? We should have the outlook of the Old Testament heroes of faith:

“All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own they desire a better country that is a heavenly one.” (Heb 11:13-16)

You have probably sung the song, Heaven Holds…

  • Reputation vs. Reality

As the year 2000 began, the financial world was abuzz over a remarkable Texas-based energy company. From its start as an oil and gas producer, the firm had expanded to pioneer online trading in energy commodities, then branched into building high-speed broadband networks. Fortune magazine named it “America’s Most Innovative Company” six years in a row. Its sales, profits, and stock price were soaring, and its name was known everywhere: Enron.

Just 18 months later, Enron was collapsing. Its stock price plummeted from $90 to just pennies. The company’s fall cost thousands…

  • Jesus Washed Feet, Should We?
In John 13, after Jesus had instituted the Lord's Supper, we find that he washed his disciples' feet (vs. 4-16). Many times the question arises, "Since Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, should we not wash one another’s feet?" Some in the denominational world have used this as justification to have a "foot washing service" as a part of the worship to God.

Washing feet is also mentioned in Luke 7 where a woman washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and wiped them with her hair. Then it is mentioned in 1 Timothy 5 as one…

    Troubled Over Immorality

    by Connie W. Adams

Nothing can create more havoc in a home or a congregation than immoral behavior on the part of Christians or their children. Webster defines immoral as "Inconsistent with purity or good morals." Immorality is defined by Webster as "the quality or state of being immoral: wickedness, esp. unchastity." It is immoral to steal, lie, cheat and a host of other things opposed to righteousness. But the term is often used of illicit sexual intercourse, including incest (1 Cor. 5:1), adultery (
