    Desiring a Better Country

All of our lives are invaded by misfortune and sorrow. Have you ever considered how the painful and disagreeable aspects of our temporal existence can help us set our minds on the things above? We should have the outlook of the Old Testament heroes of faith:

“All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own they desire a better country that is a heavenly one.” (Heb 11:13-16)

You have probably sung the song, Heaven Holds…

    Reputation vs. Reality

As the year 2000 began, the financial world was abuzz over a remarkable Texas-based energy company. From its start as an oil and gas producer, the firm had expanded to pioneer online trading in energy commodities, then branched into building high-speed broadband networks. Fortune magazine named it “America’s Most Innovative Company” six years in a row. Its sales, profits, and stock price were soaring, and its name was known everywhere: Enron.

Just 18 months later, Enron was collapsing. Its stock price plummeted from $90 to just pennies. The company’s fall cost thousands…

    Jesus Washed Feet, Should We?
In John 13, after Jesus had instituted the Lord's Supper, we find that he washed his disciples' feet (vs. 4-16). Many times the question arises, "Since Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, should we not wash one another’s feet?" Some in the denominational world have used this as justification to have a "foot washing service" as a part of the worship to God.

Washing feet is also mentioned in Luke 7 where a woman washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and wiped them with her hair. Then it is mentioned in 1 Timothy 5 as one…

Immorality is defined by Webster as "the quality or state of being immoral: wickedness, esp. unchastity." It is immoral to steal, lie, cheat and a host of other things opposed to righteousness. But the term is often used of illicit sexual intercourse, including incest (1 Cor. 5:1), adultery (

    Underrated Wisdom

As Bible students, most of us tend to have our favorite books, favorite passages, and our favorite verses. We have our favorite Bible characters, favorite stories, and we may even have our favorite virtues, or at least those that we deem to be of highest importance in our lives. We spend extra time, and justifiably so, on key texts such as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapters 5-7, the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, or the Marks of a True Christian in Romans 12. As we study these passages and diligently work to add…

    Congregational Discipline
2 Thessalonians 3:6 — But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. (NKJV)

This is a command given to every Christian when another Christian turns back to the world. The action must be carried out by every member of the congregation if it is to have the impact God intended. Most Christians recognize the New Testament teachings here and in Matthew, Romans, 1 Corinthians, and Titus regarding collective discipline within the church family. But…
