Did you ever have a teacher in school who made you enjoy a subject in a way you hadn't before? My 9th grade English teacher did that for me with reading, and the director was a huge part of why I loved band. My memory often fails to serve me as well as I would like, but I vividly remember an event, which occurred almost 40 years ago. We were attending a basketball game, and a group of girls from our high school took the court and performed a routine to music that was nothing short of embarrassing. I knew these girls. In Acts 17, Luke relates Paul’s visit to the city of Athens. It is interesting to notice, the way in which the people of Athens (especially the philosophers) are described by Luke. As they offered to allow Paul to address them on Mars’ Hill they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming? For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean.”

An elderly gentleman who hated going to the doctor became ill. Finally agreeing to go, he was given a prescription to be taken daily for a month. Taking his first dose he nearly choked! So, he added a little water to it. His next dose was just as bad, so he added a little honey to it. He continued adding a little this, a little that, until it began to taste pretty good.

My oldest daughter recently said to me in a passing comment, “Joy is a choice”. At the time, she stated it so casually, so matter-of-factly, that I nearly missed the weight of it. And while I don’t believe it was necessarily her intent to be profound, she most certainly was. Joy is, in fact, a choice.
