Psalms 2 speaks of the Lord’s Anointed One who will crush the foes of God with a “rod of iron… like a potter’s vessel” vs 9. This sentiment is echoed in Revelation to the church in Thyatira where it says, “he will rule them with a rod of iron” Rev 2:27.

As November begins, hunters here in Texas will take to the woods. For many of us, hunting is much more than just harvesting an animal. It’s about being in the fresh air, the sun rising over a dew-covered field, birds chirping and your son or daughter beside you all adding up to make the perfect hunt. As many fellow hunters know, nature has a certain way of getting to you. Jesus encourages honesty in His disciples. In Jesus’ time, the prevailing practice is to use oaths to bolster credibility (I swear by the temple!) and occasionally to lie freely (I swore by the altar, not the gift on the altar, so I don’t have to keep it!) So He teaches His disciples not to take oaths at all. “Let what you say be simply, ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil”(Matt 5:37). Followers of Jesus must develop a reputation for honesty so that our “yes” or “no” will be believed.
