    The Sluggard

The Sluggard “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” (Proverbs 13:4 KJV) Proverbs often makes comparisons between the “sluggard” and the “diligent.” According to Webster’s Dictionary a sluggard … Read More

    Who is the armor bearer?

An armor-bearer’s most obvious responsibility, as suggested by the title, is helping a warrior carry their weapons into a battle. The Greek word is ar'-mer-bar'-er (nose' keli; Greek uses a phrase, ho airon ta skeue, literally "the one carrying the armor").

In our Bibles we can see many references to the “Armor-Bearer” as one who carried the large shield and perhaps other weapons for a king (1 Samuel 31:4), commander-in-chief (2 Samuel 23:37), captain (1 Samuel 14:7), or champion (1 Samuel 17:7). All warriors of distinction had such an attendant. Rather than perish by the hand of a woman, Abimelech called upon…

    Faith and Evidence

Several years ago I decided I needed a hobby. I had many interests – basketball, fantasy baseball, music – but I engaged in all of these past times with members of the church where I preached, or with fellow Christians in the area. I needed a hobby that would put me in contact with people from all walks of life.         As it happens, several of my barbershop singing friends are from…

    Chapters and Verses

You’ve probably studied a book of the Bible chapter by chapter, or even verse by verse. You may have heard preaching about the need for “book, chapter, and verse” as authority for what we do. And doubtless you’ve learned to cite Scripture by book, chapter, and verse (e.g., John 3:16; Ephesians 6:1; etc.). We do these things, naturally, because each book of the Bible is divided into chapters and verses. But it wasn’t always so.

The Bible’s inspired authors didn’t use chapter divisions or verse numbering. While many Bible books are arranged…

    Only Providence Sees the Script

Jonathan Horn's book, Washington's End: The Final Years and Forgotten Struggle, uses Washington's own words: "There was so much he could not control: the feuding 'interests' and 'jealousies' forcing the federal city 'to pass through a fiery trial'; the hundreds of newspapers, including those belonging to 'infamous scribblers' smearing pages with libels and lies intended to 'destroy all confidence' in the government; the political parties fueling 'ill-founded jealousies and false alarms' pitting 'one part' of the people 'against another'; the countries of Europe unleashing upon the world 'a more…

    Why should we praise God?

In the Hebrew bible, the book we know as “Psalms” was called SEFER TEHILLIM, which means “the book of praises.”  Anyone who has read the book of Psalms knows how appropriate that name is.  The 150 individual psalms abound with praise and adoration to Jehovah.  The idea of praise directed to God is of course not limited to the book of Psalms.  Throughout the Bible we read of praise being ascribed to Him.

Suppose someone should ask you, “Why Should I Praise God?” What would you tell them?

We praise God because it's commanded?

Some might say, “Because God has commanded it.” While that is…
